Physical features of down syndrome
Genes primarily determine an individuals appearance and function. Children with Down Syndrome will still inherit some of their parents genes such as eye color, body structure and hair color. Individuals with Down Syndrome primarily all look alike and have the same physical features due to the extra 21st chromosome. "It is not known why approximately 40%-50% of children with Down Syndrome have congenital heart defects, yet 50%-60% do not" (Pueschel, 52). Scientist are still unsure as to why this occurs. Many characteristics of individuals with Down Syndrome do not interfere with the function of the child. Children with Down Syndrome are more similar to typical children then they are different.
Children with Down Syndrome have a smaller head than a typical child and they have a slightly flattened head- causing their heads to look round. They have somewhat of a fat face because their bones are underdeveloped and they have small noses. Individuals usually have narrow and slightly slanted eyelids as well as small mouths and ears.
If an individual with Down Syndrome has a heart disease they might have a fuller chest. Majority of individuals with Down Syndrome gentiles are not affected, they often may be small. They have small and stubby hands and feet. Their fingerprints are different from those of other children- this is how they sometimes test if they have Down Syndrome. Many children may have joint issues such as loose-jointed, double-jointed or hyperflexible.
Not all children exhibit the exact same physical traits and there are many more minor ones that were not included.
